Traveling with Atlas Obscura amid COVID-19 How We’re Adapting Our Trips Destination Requirements (via Embassy Pages)
Trip Overview

Chile is a country defined by extreme geography and a diverse blend of cultures. On this immersive journey, we will begin at the food markets and cutting-edge restaurants in Santiago and end trekking through the glaciers of remote Patagonia. We'll explore many facets of modern Chilean culture while also learning about the country's ancient histories. We'll sample delicious ceviche, Chile's national dish, and enjoy a few Pisco sours along the way. We'll enjoy a wine tasting in the Aconcagua Valley of the Andes and glimpse Incan petroglyphs. In Valparaiso, we'll learn about the poetry of its most famous son, Pablo Neruda. Ending in Patagonia, we will have endless wilderness to explore and a wide array of activities customizable to suit your interests.

  • Ride a funicular (cable car) to take in views of the Andes mountains and ocean
  • Explore one of the world’s grandest food markets in Santiago
  • Discover archeological finds and Incan petroglyphs in the Andes
  • Wine tasting in the vineyards of the Aconcagua Valley
  • Revel in poetry at Pablo Neruda’s house
  • Sip pisco sours in colorful Valparaiso
  • Horseback ride like a real Gaucho in wild, unspoilt Patagonia
  • Stay in one of the only lodges located just steps from Torres del Paine National Park

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Additional Info

The listed price of this trip is per person based on double occupancy. Internal flight costs are charged at a supplemental cost of $390 per person.

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You'll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $1,275 per person. After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll add the option to your booking and final balance.

Activity Level

Four to six miles of walking each day, with lots of time spent moving around and on your feet. You should be comfortable walking on both flat and uneven ground, as well as stairs. In Valparaiso, the terrain will be hilly during our walking tour. In Patagonia, depending on the activities chosen, some of the hikes can be moderate to challenging (ranging from 2.5miles to 12 miles). However, you can determine the level of activity you wish to have by selecting from a variety of activities available at Las Torres lodge. Some select horseback options are recommended only for those with riding experience.

Arrival & Departure

Our trip begins in Santiago, where you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.  Our trip concludes on Day 8, where we will transfer you to the Punta Arenas airport.

While in Santiago and Valparaiso, we will be staying at centrally located boutique hotels. In Patagonia, we will be staying at Hotel Las Torres. Located in the center of an Ecological Reserve, its most unique feature is its proximity to Torres del Paine National Park. Due to its location, the property acts as a base for most hikers venturing on famous hikes, such as the W trek, or guests looking to spend a day exploring the wonders of the park. We will be staying in the hotel portion of the property, in Superior Ciprés category rooms which feature large windows that overlook the peaceful mountains and the regenerative garden, or the Patagonian pampa.

Domestic Flight

As part of the trip, we will have a domestic flight on Day 5 from Santiago to Punta Arenas. The flight is approximately 3 1/2 hours in duration. Atlas Obscura will book this domestic flight on your behalf, but the cost is charged in addition to your trip price. Please refer to the Pricing section for more information.
