Traveling with Atlas Obscura amid COVID-19 How We’re Adapting Our Trips Destination Requirements (via Embassy Pages)
Trip Overview

Small, local eateries and family-run businesses are at the heart of Queens, and they’ve been pushing hard through the latest challenges. As the city’s largest and most diverse borough, Queens is a place where new immigrant communities can still afford to put down roots, bringing their food traditions with them. In collaboration with Culinary Backstreets, we’re taking a deep dive into Queens’ rich neighborhood life, including a banquet dinner in the borough’s bustling Chinatown, a behind-the-scenes visit to a Central Asian Jewish bakery, and a stop at a Colombian “fast food” joint for a South American twist on the New York hot dog.

Atlas Obscura and Culinary Backstreets are committed to supporting local businesses and organizations wherever we go. As part of the price of your trip, we’ll be donating $50 per person to the Street Vendor Project, which supports and advocates for its active vendor members in a variety of ways such as small business training and legal rights education.

Additional Info

The listed price of the trip is per person. Note that participants are responsible for their own accommodations.

Arrival & Departure

Our trip begins in Flushing, Queens in the afternoon on Day 1. We recommend (if joining from outside the city) you arrive in New York by 2 p.m. on the first day, so you can settle into your accommodations and make your way to Flushing to meet our guide and group in time for dinner. Our trip concludes in the evening on Day 3. If leaving New York directly after our tour, we recommend departing the following morning.

Activity Level

Travelers should feel comfortable walking 2 to 4 miles each day, climbing stairs, and remaining on their feet for long periods of time. Keep in mind that Queens is a bustling and crowded place and, though our pace will be relaxed, other New Yorkers like to walk fast!

We recommend staying at a hotel or other accommodations near downtown Flushing, such as The Parc Hotel, which will serve as a central location for the tour. If you choose to stay elsewhere, we strongly recommend staying in Queens. We are happy to suggest neighborhoods for booking alternate accommodations.

Trip FAQ

Joining this trip directly supports the unsung heroes of the kitchen—hardworking, independent people running some of the most economically vulnerable businesses in the cityscape who, through their daily working life, preserve local traditions embedded in food. Aside from the financial support that comes from your trip fees, you can contribute to the preservation of community spirit and memory by sharing the stories of the places and people we visit, and honoring the traditions we encounter along the way.
