Trip Overview

Marseille is where Provence crashes into the Mediterranean Sea. In this crossroads city, you are as likely to find men in djelabas sipping Moroccan mint tea at sidewalk tables as you are to find pastis—Provence’s definitive drink—poured at the bars du quartiers. Marseille’s 2,600 years of multiculturalism mixed with Provence’s long-standing food heritage has resulted in an unbelievably rich food scene. We can’t wait to share with you the city’s abundant terroir, between the fish-laden Mediterranean and farm-fresh bounty of sun-soaked Provence.

Our culinary adventure invites you to taste the many flavors of Marseille: pastis distilled from Chinese star anise, wood-fired pizza brought over by Italian immigrants and riffed upon by the sizable Armenian community, and Tunisian patisseries freshly baked by an 85-year-old legend. We’ll chat with fishermen, spice vendors, kosher bakers, Corsican butchers, and winemakers, translating their savoir-faire so that you can gain a true sense of this singular city. Along the way, we’ll learn how to make olive oil soap, play pétanque on the beach, and how to cook fish like a local—plus take a dip in the Mediterranean on an exclusive boat tour of the Calanques.

Our partner, Culinary BackstreetsIn order to create and curate this unique experience, we’ve partnered closely with Culinary Backstreets, a global guide to local eats that publishes restaurant reviews and features on local culinary culture. They bring these stories to life on culinary tours and special events, offered in 12 cities around the world, and have extensive international experience with all things gastronomical.

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You'll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $780. After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll add the option to your booking and final balance.

Activity Level

Travelers should feel comfortable walking three to four miles over the course of each day and remaining on their feet for long periods of time. We will also be spending time on a yacht with the opportunity to swim. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get hands-on during a couple workshops.
