Trip Overview

Join us aboard the Ocean Endeavor expedition ship as we trace the route of Norse explorer Leif Erikson from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, to St. John’s, Newfoundland, via coastal Labrador. Along the way, we’ll see incredible landscapes and wildlife, and stop to explore Canadian National Parks and fascinating towns. Sailing south along the coast of Greenland from the Arctic Circle, we’ll be surrounded by towering mountains and glaciers. Stop over in Nuuk, the world’s smallest capital and one of its most northern. Crossing the Davis Strait to Canada, we’ll visit Torngat Mountains National Park before continuing our southerly journey along the rugged Labrador coast. Across the Strait of Belle Isle in Newfoundland, we’ll roam North America’s only authenticated Norse site before sailing down the picturesque coast of northeast Newfoundland, and ending in St. John’s. Every day throughout this trip, there will be workshops, talks, guided hikes, and many opportunities to immerse yourself in the history, science, and traditions of this unique region.

Note: This trip is not exclusive to Atlas Obscura. Our small group of Atlas Obscura travelers will be joining a group of 186 adventurers from all across the world. We look forward to delving into the history and science of the Arctic, learning its unique stories and mysteries, and getting to know our shipmates.

  • Cross the Arctic Circle by ship
  • Visit Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik, on Québec’s Arctic coast
  • Enjoy an Inuit welcome in the administrative capital of Nunatsiavut
  • Hike among the peaks and fjords of Torngat Mountains National Park
  • Visit the restored Viking habitation at L’Anse aux Meadows

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Additional Info

Pricing & Cabin Types

The total cost of your trip depends on the type of cabin you select. Cabin costs vary, from the Interior Twin ($9,395 per person) to the Comfort Twin ($13,295 per person). Note that the price of the trip does not include the charter flight, which costs an additional $1,295.

Onboard Accommodation

There are 10 cabin types available to choose, including quads, suites, and twins. We strongly recommend recommend the twin cabin types listed below, which offer a range of options and prices. All cabins have private baths. Exterior cabins have windows while interior cabins do not. If you’d like more detailed information and/or photographs of the different cabin types, or would like to book a cabin type not listed below, please contact us.

Additional Activities

Kayaking: Explore at water level in small groups with our experienced kayak guides. We offer both single and double kayaks, as well as the essential gear for safety and comfort.

Biking: Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, an independent explorer, or are keen to cover more ground, bikes offer an opportunity to experience communities and landscapes at your own pace. We carry a fleet of Kona mountain bikes. These multi-geared, all-purpose bikes are available during select community excursions.

Activity Level

This expedition can be as leisurely or active as you’d like it to be. Excursions off-ship are optional, but they’re often the most exciting part of the day. Anyone with a medium level of mobility can come aboard the inflatable boats (Zodiacs) used for on-shore excursions—it is comparable to getting in and out of a pick-up truck. For any biking and kayaking (available at a supplementary cost), basic experience is required and physical fitness is essential. All final decisions on excursions will be made by the Expedition Leader.

Arrival & Departure

We recommend arriving in Toronto, Ontario, on September 22; the group’s charter flight departs in the early morning on September 23. Your hotel room for September 22 is included in the trip cost, and the hotel will serve as the location for an evening meet-and-greet. At the end of the trip, we’ll arrive by ship in St. John’s in the late afternoon on October 7. For returning home after the trip, we recommend that you depart from St. John's on October 8 or later, and reserve your own hotel night for October 7. The private charter flight from Toronto, Ontario, to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, is an additional cost of $1,295 and will be booked through Atlas Obscura and Adventure Canada.

Trip FAQ

Because of the exploratory nature of these voyages, we do not have a set itinerary. The final decisions on our daily program will make the best use of local ice and weather conditions, spontaneous opportunities, and wildlife.
