Trip Overview
Overview

Take a deep dive into Baltic history and culture on this immersive adventure through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. We’ll travel from Tallinn to Vilnius exploring architectural marvels, abandoned sea forts, and some outrageously pretty towns along the way. We’ll cover everything from ancient traditions to the bunkers, silos, and grand memorial complexes (in addition to two formerly closed cities) left behind in the wake of the Soviet Union. We’ll be accompanied by two expert guides, including Darmon Richter, a British travel writer and Ph.D. researcher with a particular interest in the ideological architecture of Eastern Europe. Over the course of three countries and 12 days, we’ll meet the people who make up this diverse corner of northern Europe on a unique trip that promises to be both visually and intellectually stimulating.

Highlights
  • Deep dive through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania
  • Fascinating religious traditions
  • Distinct capital cities: Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius
  • Castles, shrines, prisons, and missile silos
  • Surreal Soviet-era monuments and modernist architecture

Trip Leaders

Darmon Richter
Darmon Richter is a British travel writer and Ph.D. researcher, with a particular interest in the ideological architecture of Eastern Europe. He writes The Bohemian Blog and has contributed to Atlas Obscura since 2013. He has been leading trips with Atlas Obscura since 2017, and has guided travelers through the history, landscapes, and architecture of Bulgaria, Ukraine, the Baltics, and the Balkans.
Will Mawhood
Originally from London, Will Mawhood moved to Estonia in 2011, and later relocated to Latvia, where he still lives. He's written extensively on the history, politics and culture of the Baltics region—on topics ranging from the Lithuanian language's surprising obsession with bees to the odd story of the most expensive Soviet subway system ever designed (intended for Riga, but never constructed after protests). He put his experience of almost a decade of complete obsession with the Baltics into this itinerary, drawing from regular travels to almost every corner of the region. He also translates from Latvian now and then—ask him to pronounce the famously impenetrable Latvian tongue-twister šaurliežu dzelzceļš (narrow-gauge railroad).
