Urup consists of 4 actives volcanos : Kolokol (Bell) group; Rudakov; Tri Sestry ( Three sisters); Gora (Mountain) Ivao. It has extreme climate lags with the highest temperatures in August and the lowest in February. Urup is the fourth largest of the Urile islands.

It is about 120 km long and there is an irregular mass of sea ice that has been piled up against the islands, connecting them together.
