Pixlart

Østervrå, Denmark

A beautiful photography exhibition space housed in a former church.

For such a small town, Østervrå has quite the photography gallery.

Enter the red brick church, and you’ll see large-scale photos, often the work of regional artists, digitally projected onto the walls in the anterior former sanctuary. Other rooms contain smaller exhibitions that rotate every so often.

The church that houses Pixlart is also somewhat unusual for the region. Particularly in northern Denmark, white brick pre-Reformation churches with square towers are far more prevalent, and also mostly still in use as houses of worship.

But you don’t have to travel all the way to Østervrå to enjoy the gallery’s photography exhibitions. Pixlart also operates a mobile photo gallery, housed in a repurposed bookmobile, which travels to festivals and schools around Denmark, mostly northern Jutland. Sometimes Pixlart curators also set up other inventive public displays, such as projecting images onto old barns and silos around the countryside.
