Equal Justice Mural

In Annapolis, Maryland, the Equal Justice Mural Project honors United States Supreme Court justices Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Installed in April 2021 as part of the Kids Making History Mural Tour series, the mural was created by seven artists and five youth from underserved communities through the Future History Now initiative. Positioned across from the Anne Arundel County Courthouse, the mural celebrates the legacies of Marshall, a champion for civil rights and the first Black justice, and Ginsburg, an advocate for gender equality.

The mural is a striking visual tribute to the principle of "Equal Justice Under Law," which both justices tirelessly upheld during their careers. Marshall, born in Maryland, fought for school integration before being appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967. Ginsburg, known for her groundbreaking work on gender equality, joined the high court in 1993. Together, their faces on the mural symbolize progress and perseverance in the ongoing struggle for justice.

The project was funded by the Art in Public Places Commission and Pepsi Beverages Company, with additional support from local organizations. Today, the mural stands as a vibrant reminder of the power of community, collaboration, and the enduring impact of two legal pioneers.
