What We’ll Do

Watchmaking. Paleography. Crystal Synthesis. Mud Ball Polishing.

In The Secret Arts, one of Atlas Obscura's favorite online experiences, we invite some of the world’s rarest experts and artisans to share the hidden knowledge of their singular craft! Each edition of The Secret Arts features a different craftsperson. Unlike more instructional events, we'll explore some of the key lessons and discoveries our guests have made over the years, how you might try your hand at their unique skill yourself, and answer your questions live!

In this episode of the Secret Arts, we'll talk with José Naranja, a former aeronautic engineer turned full-time traveler and creative. During a whirlwind, nine-month trip around the world, José discovered a passion for travel and creating travel journals. Writing and drawing every day, he filled pages and pages of his pocket notebooks with intricate illustrations and reflective musings. Eventually, he began to hand bind his own notebooks as well, seeing the entire piece as a work of art. José has completed more than fifteen journals and has published two books of his journal art, The Orange Manuscript, and The Nautilus Manuscript, which are both high-quality, hand-bound replicas of his original journal pages.

During this live virtual discussion, we'll talk to José about the inspiration behind his journal pages, the tools of his trade, and some tips for creating your own travel journals, as well the lessons he's learned along the way. José will also share samples of amazing journal artwork.

Join us, and take a step into the unknown realm of The Secret Arts!

Where We’ll Be

About Your Host
Roux Bedrosian
Roux Bedrosian

Greetings! I’m Roux Bedrosian, an NJ based vocalist, musician, writer, and pop-culture enthusiast. When I’m not moderating exciting and thought-provoking events on behalf of Atlas Obscura, you’ll often find me performing at local venues, writing original fiction and poetry, or lending my voice to studio projects. Over the course of my young career, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with some pretty interesting folks – including the creative geniuses over at The Game Theorists and ShoddyCast.

By visiting, you’ll get a taste of the different things I do! You can also check out my acoustic duo, ROUVAN, on facebook! ( PS – I put out a new #60SecondCover video on Instagram every Friday (@harleyroux).
