What We’ll Do

This live show is part of our Gastro Obscura series: exploring the world’s most fascinating foods from home.

In Spain, spicy vermouth, or vermút, has historically been consumed on Sunday mornings before church. Though fewer Spaniards are attending mass today, the drink has retained its status as the most socially acceptable alcohol to imbibe before noon. Join Barcelona-based guide and sommelier Luke Watson in tracing this fortified wine’s colorful history and exploring its connection to some of Spain’s most famous artists and creators. You’ll uncover some of the secret ingredients that make vermút one of the most versatile and distinctive drinks in Europe, and have the chance to try your hand at concocting your own signature aperitif. By the end of our time together, you’ll have a bottle of homemade vermouth that you can share with friends, gift to a loved one, or sip solo.

This experience is part of our Sunday Sabor series, in partnership with Spain-based Devour Tours. Devour Tours connects people over food. Whether they're squeezing into their favorite Spanish tapas bar for a calamari sandwich or hosting a paella workshop online with guests from all over the world, they are passionate about introducing people to the food and stories that make cities unique. Through these interactive experiences, they aim to celebrate and preserve culinary traditions and history and support the small businesses that are the heart and soul of all communities.

About Your Host
Luke Watson
Luke Watson

Luke Watson fell in love with Barcelona’s food and wine scene and decided to dedicate his time to learning everything possible about it. Now a trained sommelier and food tour guide, his insatiable thirst for knowledge brought him to his current vermouth obsession. He is on a mission to perfect his Spanish-style vermouth recipe, and he’s gotten pretty close. He is also probably the only South African who can speak Catalan—and you’ll always see him upfront proudly singing the FC Barcelona hymn at game time!

What Else You Should Know

You're welcome to make your own vermouth along with Luke if you'd like, or you can follow along and learn new tricks and techniques for future culinary adventures. Most supplies and ingredients are available at any fresh food supermarket or liquor store, and all recipes and ingredients will be sent when booking.
