What We’ll Do

There are many ways to experience a new culture. You can try the food, read the literature, or listen to the music, just to name a few. But in this new digital series, we want you to get out of your seat and explore the world through movement and dance!

This month, we’ll be joined by Xianix Barrera who will introduce us to Flamenco. Flamenco is a beautifully rich art form from Andalusia, the southern region of Spain. The dance comprises three important elements; the Cante (the song), the Toque (the guitar) and the Baile (the dance), amongst others. In this interactive hour, you’ll dive into the Baile Flamenco by learning its various techniques: floreo (hand movements), braceo (arm movements), zapateado/taconeo (footwork), marcajes (marking steps), compas y palmas (rhythms and hand-clapping), and proper placement of the body. The class will conclude with a short yet fun choreography in a four-count rhythm called Tangos Flamencos. Bring your heels, your favorite skirt or vest, and get ready to feel the passion of el baile flamenco!
