What We’ll Do

Explore the world of edible insect cuisine. We'll learn about entomophagy—the fancy term for bug-eating—as it's practiced by people around the world. Bug-eating is now considered by Westerners to be the environmentally friendly alternative to eating beef, chicken, or other more conventional sources of protein. We’ll sample a smorgasbord of seasoned mealworms, dried ants from China, skewered locusts and a few surprises, plus insect-infused cocktails for those over 21 in the house. I'll give one of my famous bug-cooking demos, recruiting volunteers from the audience to help prepare and taste-test an array of edible insect treats. Still hungry? We’ll conclude with individual slices of delicious bug-topped pizzas, made especially for this event.

Where We’ll Be

The bug-eating takes place at Darrell's Tavern in Shoreline, on Seattle's northern border. Part dive bar and part legend, Darrell’s is the place “where your dad used to drink.” Join me beneath the vintage beer signs and velvet Elvis paintings for a feast for the ages.

David George

Hi. I’m David, a member of the Atlas Obscura community

I've been called The Godfather of Insect Cuisine. My book, The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook, was first published in 1998 and revised and updated in 2013. It's full of delectable recipes and glossy photos of gorgeous grasshoppers, ants, spiders, water bugs and other six- and eight-legged foods. As The Bug Chef, I've appeared everywhere from the Explorers Club, Smithsonian Institution and Ripley's Believe It or Not! museums to late night TV, where I've shared my cuisine with Conan O'Brien, James Corden, Anna Faris and Joy Behar of The View. Bug appetit, everyone!
