Would You Like Bugs With That Wine?

A gastro-entomological adventure for your taste buds.

Delve into the future of food as you taste your way through five boutique wines, each carefully paired with edible insects to highlight their unique flavor profiles.

More than 2000 species of bugs are known to be edible. Indeed, some 80 percent of the planet's cultures have included insects in their diets for thousands of years. And with good reason! Foods made from bugs have a relatively low ecological footprint, and can be quite high in protein and other nutrients. In other words, entomophagy (eating insects) is a sustainable supplement to existing sources of nutrition.

Our guide through the world of entomological cookery is Aly Moore. After studying food policy at Yale University, Aly has gone on to speak about the role edible insects will play in addressing the challenges of feeding our planet's growing population. She's been featured by Food & Wine and Forbes, and has appeared on Netflix's Bill Nye Saves the World! Aly is also the founder of Bugible, a blog about the world of edible insects.

Following a short presentation on sustainability, nutrition, insect farming, and more, the tastings will commence. As you proceed through the menu, learn the reasons behind the pairings and ask as many questions as you'd like. Each wine is matched with two different critters to allow for a wide variety of gastronomic experiences.

The menu will be geared towards bug beginners, but even expert entomophages will find something exciting to try, from Chirps Chips (made from crickets) to gourmet Merci-Mercado-spiced grasshoppers and BBQ crickets. And while a little liquid courage might help the timid, teetotalers will find much to enjoy as well.

JUST ADDED: The company Young Scent has offered to supply us with some very cool non-alcoholic options for those not wanting to drink wine during the event. Now you have no reason to not try bugs!
