Hollywood Miniature Magic

Explore the forgotten stories of Los Angeles with a tour of an elaborate diorama of 1930s Hollywood.

Join Atlas Obscura and Hollywood Heritage for a chance to explore a rare work of art, not generally open to the public, while sipping tea and learning about the lost history of Hollywood.

In the 1930s, cabinetmaker Joe Pellkofer set out to make miniature models of Los Angeles, with the help of his team of 25 artists over a period of four years. Today, one of five completed dioramas remains, tucked away in a simple storefront that was once the renowned De Longpre Gardens. This magical miniature of Hollywood Boulevard was donated to the Hollywood Heritage Preservation Resource Center in the 1980s and takes us back to a golden age of movie stars and Los Angeles legends. A full restoration of it is now underway.

Staff at Hollywood Heritage will take you on a "walking" tour of the miniature, sharing the history of its creation, as well as some of its hidden treasures. Through various collected archives, they will share the stories of who lived there, who developed the boulevard, and who are the famous—and perhaps infamous—characters that made Hollywood Boulevard what it is today. You'll also explore the art of preservation, with a demonstration of some of the techniques restorers used to bring this amazing work back to life.

ABOUT HOLLYWOOD HERITAGE

After 35 years, Hollywood Heritage strives to protect and support the renovation of the elements of Hollywood that made the place it is today. It does this by actively interacting with city, state and federal agencies and by educating the public through the continued operation of the Hollywood Heritage Museum (the Lasky DeMille Barn) and by sponsoring and presenting programs at the museum on historical topics regarding preservation and film history.

Part of the proceeds from the event go directly to support the work of Hollywood Heritage.
