Bohemian Cristal Instrument at Hotel Figueroa

A unique sound experience at a lovely, historic hotel.

Join us for a night of experiential, unique sounds at the Hotel Figueroa in downtown. Sound artist Lenka Morávková will transform the Tangier Room, a unique underground space, into a sanctuary of audio wonderment: a transcendent experience for the Digital Age.

The evening will begin with an introduction to Lenka, her background and the history of the Bohemian Cristal Instrument (aka Cristal Baschet). She will then offer a short tutorial on how it’s played. From there Lenka will take us on a sensory journey with her one-of-a-kind glass sculpture. Lenka processes the acoustic properties of the instrument in real time creating ethereal immersive soundscapes and hypnotic ambient pulses. Following the performance there will be time for a Q&A with the artist.

After the general event has ended, guests with VIP tickets will have an opportunity to check out the BCI up close and even try it out!

Lenka is originally from Northern Czech Republic, a region famous for its glass industry. The glass sound sculpture, known as the BCI, is a unique version of the legendary Cristal Baschet instrument. With the BCI Lenka has created an entirely new sonic adventure, while still remaining strongly connected to local tradition. Combining organic acoustic elements and live electronic processing, Lenka blurs the line between classical sounds and bombastic neo-futurism. Lenka recently did a TEDx talk in California, as well as a performance at The Broad Museum. She has performed for 5,000 people at Colours of Ostrava festival and has just released her debut EP UNICODE.

Hotel Figueroa boasts a rich history deeply rooted in the women’s movement in Los Angeles. The hotel was the largest commercial building funded by women for women when it opened in 1926 as a safe haven for solo female travelers, who were prohibited from checking into most hotels without a male chaperone. After 3 years of restoration to the original Spanish Colonial Revival style, the hotel reopened its doors in February 2018.

Come early and/or stick around afterwards to explore the gorgeous interior of the hotel, including multiple dining & sipping options. More on that HERE.
