Global Gastro, Local Tastes

Step up your Indian cooking skills with an expert home cook from League of Kitchens.

If you’ve ever felt a little lost picking the right eggplants to use for baba ganoush, or deciding which of the sunflower oils at a Russian supermarket is the best, then a shopping tour with an expert is a dream come true. Los Angeles has a wealth of specialty markets, grocery stores, bakeries, and delis catering to the city’s many immigrant communities, but without a guide they can prove intimidating for the uninitiated.

Atlas Obscura is excited to partner with the excellent League of Kitchens (LoK) to offer this Gastro Obscura event—a unique and personal shopping tour with one of LoK's hand selected chefs. LoK shopping tours let you explore the incredible culinary variety of Los Angeles’ neighborhoods through the eyes of an expert.

This tour focuses on the cuisine of India, with their expert Smitha Sindagi. You will meet Smitha out and about in one of her favorite shopping neighborhoods: Artesia, She will guide you through three or four of her go to local shops. The tour ends with a festive family-style meal at one of her favorite local restaurants, as well as your own shopping guide. All along the way, Smitha will explain the sights, sounds, and smells of the locations, recommending ingredients and answering questions. You’ll find out why the instructor likes these particular stores and what they do best. Most importantly, you’ll get to taste a little bit of everything!

Smitha was born in Hubli, the second largest city in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is located in the southwest of India. Smitha spent much of her childhood living in different parts of the country and poking around her neighbors’ and friends’ kitchens. However, the dishes she craves and now cooks everyday are the ones she saw her mother, grandmother, and aunts make at home. Each woman that passed through her family’s kitchen taught Smitha a different cooking skill, as well as her special take on traditional dishes. She’s been cooking the unique cuisine of North Karnataka for herself and everyone around her ever since.

The League of Kitchens is a culinary dream-team of immigrants from around the world who welcome you into their homes, teach you their family recipes, and inspire you with their personal stories.
