In the Photo of the Week feature, we highlight an exceptionally amazing photograph submitted by an Atlas Obscura user.

This week we spotlight an elemental collision from the Eternal Flame Falls in Chestnut Ridge Park in New York, brought to us by user Joseph Sullivan, aka JAS76. This photo captures the impressive tenacity of a small natural gas flame that refuses to burn out despite the incongruous water all around it. The gnarled wood and slimy rocks which are brought into focus help the fire in the cave evoke some sort of natural witchcraft; a perfectly creepy (and remarkably beautiful) image for the Halloween season.

Thanks to all of our adventurous users who keep submitting such amazing shots! Want to have your photograph featured? Keep adding your captures to our ever-growing compendium of wondrous places (just click the “Edit This Place” link at the bottom of each place). And watch here each Friday for another Photo of the Week.
