Work With Us

Interaction Designer

Atlas Obscura is looking for a junior or mid-level interaction designer to join our team. The role will be embedded within the Product team in our Brooklyn office working alongside Design, Engineering, and the COO to conceive and execute site improvements and fine tune our digital experience while also introducing new features and functionality to our digital properties.

At times, you’ll also work across departments to create digital mock-ups and to design materials for our sales, editorial, and events teams. You’ll work within an existing brand vocabulary and have a role in helping to shape and define new extensions of our quickly-growing brand.

We are looking for someone who is:
  • Well organized, articulate, detail-oriented, and a problem solver
  • Passionate about clear, functional design
  • Keen on defining—and sometimes redefining—functional requirements for user interfaces
  • A multi-faceted design-thinker who knows about brand systems, user experience, usability, development technology, and web standards
The ideal candidate has:
  • An obvious passion for clear and functional digital design, responsive layouts, usability standards, and web technologies
  • Great understanding of typography and classic design concepts
  • Some branding and identity design experience or has worked successfully within an established brand system
  • Ability to work swiftly and iteratively on multiple, overlapping projects
  • A portfolio demonstrating a solid understanding of the above
  • 1–3 years professional design experience with an emphasis on digital and interactive projects
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, Keynote and Pages
What will make you stand out:
  • Experience coding your own designs with HTML and CSS
  • An ability to demonstrate and articulate your design process
  • Experience working collaboratively
  • A passion for Atlas Obscura’s mission and a deep curiosity about the world

If this sounds like you, please email [email protected] and [email protected] with “Interaction Designer” in the subject line, your cover letter in the body of your email, a PDF resume, and link(s) to portfolio.

Head of Audience Development

Atlas Obscura is seeking a strategic, data-driven social media director to lead our Audience Development team. You'll be responsible for significantly growing our online audience and increasing user engagement while also driving real-world participation in our unique trips and events.

Responsibilities
  • Develop deals and maintain relationships with publishers, influencers, PR channels, and social media platforms to drive audience growth and event attendance.
  • Work closely with our Editorial and Events teams to interpret data, share insights, and make recommendations that will supercharge growth and engagement.
  • Manage paid social media budgets and campaigns to support our Ad Sales efforts.
  • Shape how Atlas Obscura frames, packages, and distributes content by optimizing existing distribution channels and discovering new ones.
  • Share hands-on responsibility for daily postings to Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks.
  • Set and meet goals for the Audience Development team.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in consumer-facing digital marketing, audience development, and analytics roles with experience in social media, partnerships, and PR, ideally at media organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve content performance through iterations, experimentation, and statistical analysis.
  • Mastery of analytic platforms like Google Analytics and Facebook Insights.
  • Ability to write compelling social copy, press, and publicity materials.
  • Entrepreneurial instincts, a hands-on attitude, a healthy sense of humor, and a passion for Atlas Obscura’s mission of finding and reporting on the coolest things on the planet.

Salary is competitive and includes equity. To apply, please email your resume and a short cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications to [email protected]. For bonus points, visit the Atlas Obscura home page, pick your favorite story, and include two headlines you’d suggest testing while promoting the story on Facebook.

Advertising Associate

Atlas Obscura is seeking an organized, digitally savvy Advertising Associate to join our sales and brand partnerships team in our Brooklyn office. If you’re interested in learning the business side of media, advertising, and branded content, this is an ideal position, with plenty of room for growth and multiple career tracks. You’ll join a young, growing media company and develop relationships across the media business.

You’ll serve as the day-to-day contact with our agency and brand clients—developing media plans, managing digital ad campaigns, helping execute content programs and sponsored events, producing campaign reports, and working closely with our sales, content, editorial, and product teams.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as day-to-day contact with advertising clients, vendors, and other partners.
  • Develop media plans for digital campaigns that include display media, video and branded content, podcasts, events, and other elements.
  • Partner with Atlas Obscura’s ad ops provider to coordinate campaign set up, testing, QA, optimizations, inventory checks and management, and campaign reports.
  • Help out where and as needed across our brand partnerships business, working with editorial, marketing, product, and events and helping us grow our business from the ground up.
Requirements
  • 1–2+ years of digital media or advertising experience.
  • Some experience working in ad ops, planning, account management, sales marketing, or similar.
  • Ability to quickly learn the ins and out of the digital advertising ecosystem, including media planning, pricing, ad products, advertising standards, ad serving, rich media, and analytics.
  • Comfortable interacting with agency and brand-direct clients.
  • Ability to work on a small, entrepreneurial team and a willingness to pitch in across the organization.
  • A passion for digital media, exploration and Atlas Obscura’s mission of finding and reporting on the coolest things on the planet.

To apply, please email your resume and a cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications for the role to [email protected], with “Advertising Associate” in the subject line.
