Atlas Obscura is hiring an editor to help us create the definitive guide to the world’s most curious and wondrous food and drink. Over 9,000 people have contributed to Atlas Obscura, our online guide to the world’s hidden and curious places, and in 2016, we published our first book based on the Atlas, which became a bestseller. You’ll help us do the same with food.
As our senior food editor, you’ll join our growing, Brooklyn-based team. You’ll be responsible for heading up the online food guide/database, which will become the raw material for our next book. The guide is a communal project—you’ll edit entries (about halo-halo, hallucinogenic honey, and more) written by our staff, freelancers, and community of readers and culinary explorers. You’ll also write articles about hidden sides of the food world that highlight our food guide/database.
For this role, you’ll need the research, writing, and editing skills to edit food entries, transform contributions from our audience into thrilling write-ups, and write compelling articles. You’ll also need the people skills to encourage participation and engagement by our audience. This is a great role if you love food and want to join a growing media startup, manage a new project, and inspire people to have novel experiences.
To apply, please email your resume, at least four writing/editing samples, and a cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications to [email protected], with “Senior Editor” in the subject line. To stand out, please send two suggestions of curious or wondrous foods that belong in our food guide, along with a several paragraph description that communicates what is interesting and unique about that food or drink.
