Exploring the Tragedies of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery

Join us for a walking tour of Seattle’s Mt. Pleasant Cemetery to learn the unique stories of the victims of some of Washington’s most infamous tragedies.

Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Queen Anne houses graves and monuments dedicated to some of the darkest chapters of Washington State history. Join Field Agent Jared Steed as we walk the cemetery to hear these stories and discuss how they shaped the Seattle we know today.

During our one-hour tour, we will pay our respects to the unidentified victims of the S.S. Valencia that floundered in the Graveyard of the Pacific. We will discuss Seattle’s early involvement in organized labor, as we visit the graves of those involved in the "Everett Massacre" and see where some of the ashes of executed songwriter Joe Hill were spread.  We will also learn about America’s deadliest avalanche as we stand at the graves of passengers and workers lost in the Wellington train disaster.

Our tour will end on a high note at the graves of civil rights leader Bertha Pitts Campbell and Children’s Hospital founder, Anne Clise, as we remember that for every story of tragedy, there is also a remarkable and uplifting one.
